Adbusters Issues New Call to Action: Occupy Chicago for G8/NATO Summit

Let me say for the 5th time, that the use of this image is priming the pump for violence.

It doesn’t help that Chicago cops are dead set on beating the everloving shit out of anybody protesting or demonstrating. They’re chomping on the bit so hard that they are complaining that the mayor doesn’t want them to bring guns.

You know what? I wasn’t going to say anything, but this is pissing me off.  Leah is damn right: let’s not pump people up to violence.

But seriously? Where the fuck is your proof that cops are “chomping at the bit” and that they want to beat the shit out of people? ALL of the cops I know are concerned about people’s SAFETY.  The cops that help out at Critical Mass have to put up with people breaking the law on purpose to test them, screaming things like “pig” and “I smell bacon”.  And then they get headbutted by assholes wearing bike helmets, and when they detain people for ASSAULTING AN OFFICER the bikers start screaming about brutality and bitching that they can’t record it.

I agree that should be able to record the police.  But fuck you with sandpaper if you genuinely think that the entire CPD is just waiting to beat the shit out of protesters for the fact that they are protesters.  Don’t let some bad cops allow you to color an entire city that way.  Don’t let your own fucking bigotry show how ignorant and naive you are.  Remember all those officers from other cities that got arrested while standing with protesters in NYC?  They’re cops too, asshat.  So are the guys that ride the bus with me every morning, and the ones that stopped assholes that work in the CBOT from assaulting the Occupy protesters when I was walking to my bus stop one night.

tl;dr version: grow the hell up and stop blaming cops for everything.

I know I’ll probably regret posting this but I can’t STAND it when people blast cops like this.

Sorry, crosberg, but 8bitian has evidence that certain populations of cops are itching to fight.

Oh hey, what’s that? Chicago cops talking anonymously on a copblog about how pissed they are that Rahm won’t let them bring guns? And how they’re going to cover up their badge numbers and take off their stars and wear signs that say “99% Too!” to throw off the protestors? I guess I don’t have proof, though. Nope, not at all.

When did I say you didn’t have proof? I said show it to me, and reminded you that one group of cops does not a city-wide conspiracy make.  Thank you for passing the link along, I hadn’t seen it yet and it scares me, especially for the safety of the protesters and the cops that aren’t a part of this.

But I can bet you, dollars to donuts, that there are just as many angry protesters out there that will want to get into it with the cops as there are cops posting on this blog.  My point was that you are vilifying a massive group of people for the behavior of the few.  Don’t you get pissed when people say that the occupy protesters are a bunch of whiny kids that need to take a shower and get a job? Then don’t do the same thing to the cops.  Don’t help the violence start.

Yeah? Let’s see it. Because certain populations of vegans throw paint on fur coats, too.  That doesn’t mean that all vegans break the law and assault people, does it?  There has been TOO MUCH vitriol around this topic: not all the protesters are gods, not all the cops are monsters.  Everybody there is just people.  And as much as I can appreciate the fear felt when going up against a huge government machine (I’ve been to my share of protests, after all, and was told that if ever arrested my father would only bail me out if that’s why I got tossed in jail).  But that doesn’t mean you can go around tossing hyperbole like it’s truth and exaggeration like it’s fact.

You show me one cop that’s a power-drunk butthead, I’ll show you sixty that aren’t.  You show me sixty protesters that are respectful of other people and really believe in their community and their message, I’ll show you one who’s an asshole: spitting on people, screaming, punching, and doing more to hurt his own cause than his opponents.

And let’s see the goddamned proof.

“DC Hot” is a phrase that I use to describe extremely average looking yet stuck up jerks who may have at one time been “Cambridge hot” (as in Harvard). They’re not even big fish in a small pond; they’re average sized fish in a puddle.

[See also:  UChigoggles, the state of being surrounded by UChicago students (who are often so unconcerned with looking physically attractive that they don’t brush their hair or put on clean pants) for so long that non-malformed people start looking extraordinarily attractive.  One time when I lived in Hyde Park, I went out in River North and my face almost exploded from the shock.]

UChigoggles…maybe the reason I had a string of BAD first dates while living in Hyde Park?

This is a deep-dish pizza from Giordano’s, a Chicago-based pizza chain. Look at all that cheese. It’s so beautiful!

Funny thing about Giordano’s, though. It turns out the company’s embattled owner is a sovereign citizen, meaning he does not believe the laws of the United States apply to him because he is his own sovereign nation. As you can imagine, this has made the company’s bankruptcy proceedings something less than routine.

Why are American pizza moguls so crazy?

The things I don’t know about Giordano’s.

(Dear East Coast,

Do you think Godfather’s can outdo this?

Love, the Midwest)

An $81 million library opened Monday at the University of Chicago.

And there’s not a book in sight.

Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library provides 180 seats for students and faculty to study under a glass dome constructed from 691 panels, none of them exactly the same shape. The library also expands digitization and conservation operations for the university’s collections, which include a piece of a Gutenberg Bible and books printed on papyrus, ancient Egypt’s version of paper.

Fifty feet below ground on the Hyde Park campus, a system of five automated cranes retrieves and stores volumes that are sorted according to book size, not content. The new library has room for 3.5 million volumes in the underground area, which is not accessible to anyone but select library staff.

Whooooooa.

The only way to encourage University of Chicago students to get some damn sunlight is to build a giant study area beneath a dome of windows.

^ True statement.  Except for the archaeology folks, then you can’t get them inside unless you entice them with bones.

Hey guys guess what, I have $2.25 so i have the opportunity of riding the El whenever i fucking want. I could ride it all afternoon! But you know where I can’t ride it? To Pullman. Or Mount Greenwood. Or Hegewisch. Or anywhere south of 95th on the Southeast Side, actually. Or Morgan Park. There is so much city this map doesn’t show.

On one of these maps on the Blue Line, a vandal wrote “DERP” in the lower left hand corner of the map where the trains don’t go but people still live in droves.

Derp, indeed.

I live just on the south side of Chinatown, scant blocks from the Red Line, which is super convenient.  I can take the State Street bus basically all the way to work, which is awesome.  Wentworth bus gets me home.

But when I worked out in Itasca (west of O’Hare, for the uninitiated) I couldn’t get to Union/Ogilvie in less than 45 minutes using public transit (and then another hour and a half on the Metra, and half hour of walking to my office). 2 buses or a bus and a CTA ride was required to get to a station that I live almost immediately south of by 3 scant miles.  There were jobs aplenty out in Itasca that no one from my neighborhood could get to without a car.

I don’t live in a poverty stricken area.  I don’t live in a mostly-minority area.  I live in Bridgeport, where the first Daley lived.  I live blocks from a major sporting arena.  But when there’s a bomb threat downtown and the buses get all weird, they change my 24 Wentworth bus into a 22 Clark bus so that all the rich white folks can get home, stranding 34 people (THIRTY. FOUR. PEOPLE.) waiting to get home at Roosevelt in 40 degree, rainy weather.  Half of them had kids to get home to down in the 60s and 70s, ended up sharing cabs.  You know some of them went without dinner because of it.  And it pisses me right the fuck off.

This.  This makes me laugh so hard.

Julia Allison moving back to Chicago, to “blog” for the Tribune about social media including “Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn.”  I hope they throw GeoCities in there too, I’ve been craving a good GeoCities blog post for a while now.

Unrelated news: Chicago residents have started carrying around sheets of plastic to sit on when seated on public benches, CTA buses, and the L, supposedly due to fears surrounding a freak outbreak of a particularly virulent strain of herpgonnosyphAIDS with the ignoble nickname of “Famewhore.”

The spirit of the season.

On Christmas Day, Jews everywhere flock to Chinese restaurants. I live in an area that’s easily 60% Jewish (if not more…north shore of Chicago whut whuttt). For the first time in 30 years, my favorite local Chinese place opened on Christmas day.

This is a family-owned local favorite. Their normal staff consists of two servers, a cashier and two cooks. They didn’t know how busy they would be…or how much the community loves them. When we arrived at 6:20, there was a line out the door for pickup. We didn’t find an empty table for 20 minutes. It was another 20 before our table was bussed. It took a half hour to get egg rolls and another hour on top of that to get our entrees.

In the midst of all the chaos, a woman and her daughter sitting behind us didn’t want to sit still. They asked if they could help clear off a table for an elderly couple that sat neglected at an unbussed table in a corner. It inspired a movement in this tiny restaurant. Everyone pitched in. They bussed the tables. I refilled all the teapots and sweet and sour sauce containers. The man sitting near the TV made sure everyone’s water glasses were full. Another woman in the booth behind my mother made sure every table was set and everyone else had ample napkains. No one walked out. No one complained. We became one big family all eating together in one space.

These are my people. This is the spirit of the season.

Wonderful story.

This is one of the many reasons I love where I grew up.

For @LocalCelebrity

Sources: Wrigleyville (60657) and Bridgeport (60616)

Similar population size, but my neighborhood has significantly less formal education, almost HALF the average household income, spend 40%+ less money on their lifestyles…and we have the same IF NOT LOWER crime rate.

The south side is NOT ubiquitously dangerous, just like the north side is not always safe (hello pipe bomb in Evanston).  Sometimes I can’t help but feel that people who genuinely believe they will get shot in my neighborhood are bigoted, whether knowingly or not.  There is more gang related violence in Uptown than my neighborhood.

You wanna know what Bridgeport is like?  Let’s go ask all the grandmothers that were sitting on their stoops with their kids and grandkids last weekend watching a saint’s day celebration marking the beginning of the school year.  Let’s talk to the multitude of cops and firefighters who live in single family homes and brownstones up and down the street.  Let’s ask the tons of small business owners overflowing from Chinatown.

Mayor Daley isn’t running for re-election… This is going to be amazing.

I think I need to change my pants.

This is gonna be interesting.
